Position Title: Senior Business Analyst

Reports to: Finance Manager

WestEd — a nonpartisan, nonprofit research, development, and service agency — works with education and other communities throughout the United States and abroad to promote excellence, achieve equity, and improve learning for children, youth, and adults. WestEd has more than a dozen offices nationwide, from Massachusetts, Vermont, and Georgia, to Illinois, Arizona, and California, with headquarters in San Francisco.

The Finance team is responsible for financial reporting and analysis, assisting in the creation and review of cost proposals, reviewing and approving project and agency budgets, and supporting the agency’s reporting tools. The Finance team also oversees insurance and investment management for the agency as well as strategic agency projects.

Position Description

The Senior Business Analyst will be a member of WestEd’s Finance Department reporting to the Finance Manager. The Senior Business Analyst is responsible for a variety of financial, analytical and project management activities related to strategic business decisions across WestEd. The financial activities include data analysis, budgeting, financial modeling and reporting, cost control, and others. Generally, this position is responsible for program outreach and project budgeting, Executive- and Board-level financial reporting and ad hoc projects, and management of various cross-departmental and strategic projects.

Responsibilities

Working closely with the Finance Manager and Finance team (including Director of Finance & Contracts and CFO) the incumbent will optimize data analysis and financial reporting to support WestEd’s strategic, operational and financial goals.
1. Serve as a liaison between the Finance team, WestEd programs and Information Services by understanding and critically evaluating business needs against system capabilities and organizational capacity.
2. Partner with staff, project directors, technical resources, and other stakeholders to analyze needs, determine scope of solutions, and help define and deliver solutions that meet customer expectations.
3. Analyze current business process, recommending improvements, and developing the business and functional requirements needed to ensure that the analysis delivered, including technology solutions, meet the needs of the business.
4. Develop financial reports to highlight key business components and models that support current WestEd business strategies and goals.
5. Provide project management skills to independently lead cross functional teams to design and implement new financial reporting system.
6. Provide financial basics training, promote financial knowledge among the Program operations staff and increase financial understanding via outreach and communication.
7. Work collaboratively with the Finance team to review and develop key financial and budgetary initiatives to ensure successful implementation and compliance across all departments and programs.
8. Identify and recommend opportunities to streamline financial and informational reporting; provide recommendations regarding transactional system changes or upgrades to the Finance Manager.
9. Design, create, prepare and analyze complex financial reports and models including variance and trend analysis, consolidated reporting and analysis across the organization. Provides key information to CFO to drive business decisions, identify issues and opportunities for continuous quality improvement.
10. Evaluate existing business processes across WestEd programs. Recommend improvements to increase accuracy and processing time and to gain consistency.




Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher and 5-7 years of relevant work experience.
• Extensive and in-depth knowledge of and experience with financial analysis, financial modeling and reporting management of financial databases, business intelligence, budget management and development, and financial systems/applications.
• Experience with the strategic design, implementation, and maintenance of BI software and systems.
• Strong project management skills and experience, including reviewing and improving business practices and processes.
• Ability to structure and perform complex financial models and data queries to support strategic business planning, financial-based decisions and practices with adherence to WestEd financial policies and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Expert-level skill with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and Powerpoint.
• Must be accurate, detailed-oriented and yet be able to view financial information from a broad organizational perspective.
• Demonstrated professional maturity and organizational political astuteness combined with tact, diplomacy, common sense, sound judgment and confidentiality.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a diverse work environment and various levels of management.
• Must be a self-starter, an independent thinker, action-oriented and self-motivated.
• Interest in applying corporate business practices to the non-profit sector within an organization whose mission is to improve the educational systems that serve children and families.
• Experience with Cognos reporting software a plus.
• Familiarity and experience with federal contracts and contracting rules / regulations a plus.
