AGENCY BACKGROUND
The San Francisco Housing Development Corporation (“SFHDC”) is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation formed in 1988 by primarily San Francisco African American community leaders who were deeply invested in combating the widespread displacement of residents resulting from ‘redevelopment programs’ that disproportionately affected African Americans and other people of color. Focused on serving people of color and all people of low- and moderate-income, our mission is to foster financial stability through the development of affordable housing, the facilitation of homeownership and the economic empowerment and revitalization of Bayview Hunters Point and other neighborhoods of San Francisco. In the midst of the City’s ongoing housing crisis, SFHDC provides urgently needed housing and related services that preserve diversity, generate economic equity and empower individuals and families of all racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds to hold on to life in San Francisco.

JOB DESCRIPTION Summary:
The Communications Associate plays a vital role in framing SFHDC’s mission and accomplishments to external media, as well as increasing efficiency and a sense of community to internal stakeholders.

External Communications:
As SFHDC prepares to celebrate 30 years of providing affordable housing and related services to San Francisco’s low- and moderate-income communities of color, the organization has become a leader in addressing San Francisco’s notorious housing crisis. Over the last four years, SFHDC has increased its operating budget by 600%, and the organization has several high profile real estate development projects in the pipeline. The Communications Associate will help tell SFHDC’s story across social media, through direct email campaigns, on company websites, via press releases and at SFHDC’s annual Gala and Awards Dinner.

Internal Communications: Because SFHDC is integrally involved in multiple real estate development projects and housing service programs across Bayview-Hunters Point, Western Addition, Hayes Valley, Ocean Beach and other neighborhoods, our staff of 20+ employees works in a variety of fast paced environments. The Communications Associate will implement solutions for workers in the field to efficiently exchange information with supervisors and other staff members.

The Communications Associate will report directly to the Communications and Fund Development Officer, and will also work closely with the CEO and the Manager of Special Events.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage and maintain SFHDC’s social media feeds on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest, including accounts related to special events.
Manage and maintain SFHDC’s various websites.
Monitor performance metrics and user feedback on company websites, social media platforms, email campaigns and post-event surveys.
Work closely with the Communications and Fund Development Officer to ensure succinct branding and well-crafted communications on all channels.
Work closely with the Communications and Fund Development Officer and the CEO to identify and execute the best mix of communications channels and messaging styles to disseminate information across the organization.
Collaborate with staff from all departments to document events (e.g. Backpack Giveaways, Financial Empowerment Workshops, Groundbreaking Ceremonies) through photo and written assets to be distributed via newsletters and on social media.
Manage and maintain contact lists using Salesforce, Constant Contact and Google Apps.
Design layouts and edit creative assets using Photoshop, Illustrator and similar tools.
Meet with and report to the Communications and Fund Development Officer on a regular basis to discuss issues associated with the communications strategy.
Administrative duties to include the processing of mail, correspondence, coding invoices and maintaining both electronic and paper files.
Undertake tasks as may be assigned by the Communications and Fund Development Officer.
Assist with preparation and packaging of major project or funding proposals.

REQUIRED SKILLS
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a mastery of tone and grammar.
Demonstrated experience in managing social media platforms, with a particular emphasis on Facebook and Twitter.
Proficiency in web publishing tools such as Wordpress, Drupal, Weebly, Ghost or other software.
Experience working with photo editing and publishing software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design and Acrobat.
Ability to meet tight deadlines working collaboratively with members of a diverse team.
Capacity to manage two or more projects independently.
Passion for the mission of providing affordable housing and financial empowerment to San Francisco residents.
Willingness and ability to be flexible with work schedule to attend evening or weekend events.

PREFERRED SKILLS
Experience with web development and ability to create a new site from the ground up.
Basic bilingual communication in any of the following: Spanish, Samoan, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog.
Familiarity with enterprise communications tools such as Slack, Facebook @ Work, Yammer, HipChat, Flock, Asana or others.
Familiarity with digital signage software.
Proven ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Creative Writing or a related field; OR three or more years of experience in communications role with a portfolio of work that demonstrates the required skills, and for which you were a major contributor.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in the fields listed above.
Five or more years of experience in a similar communications role.

Special Requirements and Work Conditions: Some evenings and weekends may be required, particularly to attend SFHDC-hosted events. Requires possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of California, with a driving record acceptable to SFHDC’s insurance providers. Work is typically in an office setting and involves frequent walking, standing, leaning, bending, as well as frequent contact with outside service providers, private housing providers, community partners, foundations, government agencies and the public in our office or at other offices. Requires frequent operation of desktop computers, laptops, printers and other standard office equipment.
